Alfred McAdams

Alfred McAdams is the Loudoun Arts Council's featured artist for the month of May. McAdams has been painting for 66 years and is currently showing his work at Gallery 222 in Leesburg. His one-man show, "Variations", invites viewers to enter a world of visual delights and fantasies.

McAdams was born in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1914, and he has lived and worked in the Washington area for most of his adult life. He studied art at the Corcoran Gallery of Art School and at George Washington University as well as at the Art Institute of Chicago. His work was shown for many years at the Franz Bader Gallery and, later, at Gallery K.

His new series of Matisse variations, works on paper, will be on display, as well as many large oils on canvas. A big admirer of the French artist, Alfred claims that Matisse has been a dependable guide for much of what he has wanted to do, and he has used some of his ideas as seeds for his own paintings.

Alfred moved to Loudoun County in 1948 when he and his late wife, June, bought the old Lickey General Store on top of Mount Gilead and used it as a weekend retreat. Later, the couple transformed the old store into a year-round home where he still resides.

"Variations" will open on May 1 and will continue through May 31. For more information, call (703) 777-5498.
