Featured Artist ArchiveJan Edmondson
The Loudoun Arts Council has selected Jan Edmondson as the Featured Artist for June 2003. Edmondson began playing guitar at age 11 when her older brother showed her a few chords. Over the next few months, she was able to figure out the chord accompaniments for many popular songs just by listening to records. Her mother, realizing that this probably indicated some musical talent, signed Jan up for classical guitar lessons with Myrna Sislen at Sophocles Papas' Guitar Shop in Washington, DC. Over the next ten years, Jan also studied guitar with David Perry, Jesus Silva, and John Marlow and participated in master classes with Charlie Byrd, Michael Lorimer, and Andres Segovia. At American University, she was the Outstanding Senior Scholar and graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in guitar performance. In Loudoun County, Jan has written, arranged, and performed music for Loudoun's Very Special Arts group. She has played at First Night Leesburg, at Willowcroft and Breaux vineyards, and for many special events such as art show openings and weddings. She teaches private lessons and has former students majoring in guitar performance in college. Her repertoire includes everything classical as well as contemporary fingerstyle guitar. Most recently, Jan went back to school and earned her teaching certificate in vocal/choral music. She teaches guitar, chorus, and general music full time at Eagle Ridge Middle School in Ashburn. Jan plans to study for a Master's in Guitar Performance with Larry Snitzler at George Mason University in the near future. "Mostly," she says, "I want to do what's necessary to keep the guitar program going in the schools and to encourage the many talented young people we have right here in Loudoun to fulfill their guitar dreams."
