Featured ArtistLeesburg Jazz ProjectImprovisational By NatureWhat does Leesburg need to complete its image as the hip-yet-traditional Loudoun town? Ask Anne Carlson and Joe Scott, and they'll tell you it needs a jazz scene. Fortunately, as jazz musicians and Loudoun residents, Carlson (a singer and pianist) and Scott (a drummer) are in an excellent position to create just such a scene. In January 2005, the two formed the Leesburg Jazz Project (LJP) after years of working on their own musical careers. LJP functions as both a performance group and a network hub for jazz musicians in the county looking for new opportunities. Eventually, they hope LJP will also work through the county's schools to create programs that introduce more students to the world of Jazz. Their repertoire focuses on classic jazz era tunes form the 1930s, 40s and 50s. The music of that period, as Carlson puts it, is "rooted in melodies that you can't help but tap your foot to." In other words, music that is enjoyable for an audience as diverse as Loudoun's population has become. The duo can be found playing at Market Street Coffee in Leesburg, as well as other venues around town. For information, contact Anne Carlson at 540-668-6861.
