    Painting the Landscape with Maggie Siner

    • It's all about light in the special painting workshop with renowned painter Maggie Siner.     How to Photograph Your Art

    • Get the tools you need to produce quality photographs that will represent your artwork in a professional light. Students will learn about set-up, lighting, perspective, color correction, printing and electronic submission. Must pre-register.

    Foundations: Exploring Digital Photography-Beginner

    • Five-week course covering the fundamentals of digital photography. Learn how to effectively access and apply the wide array of camera functions available to you as a photographer and be able to translate those skills into creating photos at new levels of quality. The course will also cover fundamentals of composition and design, exposure control, image formats and an introduction to the digital (computer-based) darkroom.

    Life Portraits in Watercolor

    • Watercolorist Jill Poyerd will walk you through her technique for painting portraits that capture moments in life. Learn how to spot a "moment" and plan the painting, as well as how to bring out the personality of the subject. Additional topics include proportions, skin tones and coordinating backgrounds with subject matter. Participants will be working from photographs. For the intermediate or advanced watercolorist.

    Beginning Pastels: Portraiture & Floral

    • Pastels are known and loved for their rich, vibrant pigments and forgiving nature. Learn to see color with new eyes as Rachel helps you master the subtleties of color within skin tones, fabrics and floral. We will work from photographs and instruction will focus on the basics: transferring an initial drawing to a pastel surface, color application and blending and layering techniques to achieve a striking life-like painting. Class atmosphere is fun and relaxed and the individual critique will benefit each student, teaching them how to problem solve. Students will begin by master copying. Some previous drawing experience is helpful. Bring supplies to first class.

  • Bella Vista Photography

    Flower Photography Workshop - Dahlias!

    • Workshop includes classroom training on relevant equipment, techniques and composition guidelines on Wednesday at Franklin Park Arts Center in Purcellville, VA. Then on Thursday we'll go to a private grower's farm in Leesburg, VA to practice photographing the dahlias before they are harvested for sale at local farmers markets. After lunch, we'll wrap up back at the classroom where we'll have the opportunity to review some of the shots with the group and receive constructive feedback. Workshop is geared for the intermediate photographer. A basic familiarity with the operation of your camera is essential for this class.

    Beginner Clogging

    • We offer classes to people of all ages and proficiency levels. Prior dance experience is not required in order to participate in our beginner classes. New beginner classes will start September 9. The beginner classes are on Thursday nights from 7-8PM. The cost of lessons is $25/person/month. (There is a one-time administration fee of $15/person or $25/family.) No preregistration is required. Wear comfortable, modest clothing and shoes that don't grip the floor too tightly. Our experienced dancers are at the clogging barn on Tuesday and Thursday nights and welcome you to come see our practice sessions. (Tuesdays 6-9PM; Thursdays 8-9PM.)

    Intermediate Pottery Class

    • Intermediate students will be presented more challenging lessons, pitcher spouts, handling and altering form. Students will learn various technique for glazing bisque pots.     Ages 14-19 Teen Photography Camp

    • This class is designed to help students build a foundation in basic photography. We will learn about composition and lighting along with exploring the "creative" manual zones of their SLR Cameras (Digital or Traditional) Each class will begin with instruction and a critique at the art center followed by a hands on photo shoot.

    Observational Drawing

    • Understanding the visual language begins with drawing. It is considered the single most important studio discipline and basic to visual thinking and expression. Observational drawing encourages immediate and intimate vision and invites us to explore the poetry of our visual experiences. This course is for students at all levels of experience and consists of discussions about masterworks, incremental exercises, critique, demonstrations, short and long drawings.

    Intermediate Wheel/Handbuilding Combo Class

    • This class is for experienced ceramics students. Learn to push the limits of clay and build more advanced forms by combining wheel thrown components with hand building techniques. We will alter and combine multiple forms to create large vessels and unique art pieces. In addition particular emphasis will be placed on teaching various surface decoration techniques. Group and Individual discussions will help guide this class to explore new and creative forms in ceramic art.

    Fresh Paint": Plein Air 2-Day Watercolor Workshop with Catherine Hillis

    • Award-winning water colorist Catherine Hillis will lead students in a 2-day workshop, exploring the power of plein-aire painting. Both days will include sketching on site in and around the historic village of Round Hill and then bringing sketches into the studio to produce a carefully designed painting. The instructor will provide daily demonstrations, critiques and one on one coaching. Students must provide their own watercolor supplies, sketchbook and pencils; a digital camera is highly recommended (see supply list). Students may have the opportunity to display their work.

    Braided Roving Rug Workshop

    • Students will make a 2 X 3 foot rug using natural and dyed color roving from Loudoun Valley Sheep Producers (LVSPA) sheep farms. You will learn design considerations, braiding process, felting the braid and sewing the braid into a rug. The process is fast, fun and easy. It's a wonderful a hand made Holiday heirloom gift!

    Folksong Workshop: one night only!

    • Bring your guitar and join the group in learning a classic folksong. No experience necessary. We will work on "Blowin' In The Wind" by Bob Dylan, and master the three chords and sing too. Good introduction to Folksong.

    Portraiture Workshop (Drawing)

    • What is likeness? The most difficult subject to draw or paint from life is the human head. Learning how to create meaningfully complex images of the head is challenging and rewarding. Using classroom demonstrations, incremental exercises, and long studies, students explore the structure and expressive issues related to drawing and painting the head.

    Beginning-Intermediate Watercolor with Janie Jones

    Introduction to Oils

    • Though many people consider oil painting the most "serious" type of painting, did you know that it's also one of the easiest painting media to work with? Join us for a fun introduction to oils where we'll learn to layout a painting, rough in the colors, add shading and highlights, and uses glazing and impasto for effect. You'll be amazed at what you can do!

    Clay Sculpture Class

    • This class will be teach the basics of hand building techniques, which include: the pinch, the coil and the slab. Students will learn the perform slab techniques manually as well as using the extrude and the slab roller. During the class, we will be making different projects with each technique as well as mixing them. Learning these processes will enable students to work toward a good final product and encourage individual creativity.

    Introduction to Traditional Botanical Art

    • Local botanical artist Karen Coleman will discuss the tradition of botanical art, the current renaissance in contemporary botanical art, and the steps to an effective drawing and painting. Although this will be mainly lecture format, students will have the opportunity to draw a small botanical subject.

    A Crash Course in Play Writing

    • Class 1: An introduction to the basics of classic story structure as well as comedy, presentations by the two actors who will be performing dramatic readings of the students' plays at the end of the crash course, and a play writing exercise to create the outline of a ten-minute play. Class 2: A second writing exercise, guest speaker, and discussion by the two actors and the director, McMath, of how writers, actors and directors work through a play. Class 3: Another writing exercise (this one created from the day's headlines), guest speaker, and time spent with the director and actors as they interpret each of the student's finished plays.

    Ukrainian Egg Decorating Workshop

    • This class is designed to teach traditional Ukranian Egg Decorating. We will be using a process of hot wax and dyes to create beautiful designs on eggs. You will be taught each step of the process so you will be able to continue to enjoy this art for years to come. You will leave the class with Christmas ornaments you will be able to hang on a tree. Amy Berringer is a local artist. She discovered the art of Ukrainian egg decorating while watching Mr. Rogers Neighborhood with her children. The show inspired her to order books and supplies to create these beautiful eggs. Once she started she was hooked and has enjoyed making them for family and friends and selling them at art fairs for Christmas and Easter.

    Beginning Hand-Quilting

    • This class is designed for beginner quilters. We will be piecing a simple wall hanging in which you will learn how to select fabric, cut fabric with a rotary cutter, piece with a sewing machine and quilt by hand. Requirements: Students need to have a sewing machine they can bring to class. Amy Berringer been quilting for 20 years. Her quilts have received awards and praise. She has taught many family members and friends to quilt over the years all whom have become successful quilters. Amy is passionate about keeping the art alive and passing down the skills from generation to generation.

    Science and Art Workshop

    • Ever paint with a bubble, or a fish? Wonder where colors come from or how natural elements effect paints and their colors. In this two-day workshop we will examine scientific principles using art, create master pieces, learn about some intriguing scientists and explore the wonderful world of art AND science. Plan to get messy. We'll need a t-shirt size also!

    Sewing 101

    • This is an introductory class; sewing starting at the very basics. Students will be applying skills and knowledge to their choice of projects beginning with the third week. There will be one class held at a fabric store, to help students understand the materials acquisition process and the materials available. From the third class on, time will be divided between lecture and practical. Unless special arrangements are made students will be expected to provide their own sewing machine, scissors, their own project and basic supplies.

    Intro to Folksong at the RHAC

    • A course designed to get you strumming AND singing! Starting with a few basic chords, we will learn strumming and picking technique. We will apply our first chords to a Bob Dylan song that everyone can sing. It has sixteen verses, so all will have a solo and we'll not quit playing till the song is over! At the end of six weeks, we will have added three other songs to our repertoire and gotten off to a great start! Folksong Two will continue where we left off, with other songs of the sixties. Prerequisite: Bring your own guitar. *Instructor has made special arrangements with local music store to discount you nylon string class guitar should you need to purchase.

    Singing Studio

    • If you like to sing and are interested in improving your vocal instrument, my gentle vocal exercises and breathing technique will enable you to sing better and with added confidence. Main goal: learn how to get a "singers breath", support your voice and stop singing in the throat. Each participant will receive a friendly analysis of their instrument, participate in group and solo vocal exercises and learn the song of their choice or teacher recommendation, to present at the end-of-course recital. (Participation in recital is by choice and not mandatory!) 6 sessions.

    Beginning Hand Building, Ages 16 and up

    • The possibilities are endless! Come and check out what you can do with a few simple handbuilding techniques. Learn the most current and creative ways of working with slabs, coils and pinching to create virtually any form you can dream up. Experiment with a wide range of color and texture using slips, stains and glazes on your functional or sculptural artworks. Individual and group discussions will help guide you as you develop your ideas. This class is appropriate for all skill levels. Taught by Ceramic Artist, Amy Manson who has worked with and taught Handbuilding in both North and South Carolina for the last 8 years. She has studied Handbuiling at Penland School of Craft and Odyssey Center for Ceramic Arts and cannot wait to share her unique handbuilding projects with the class.

    Be the Photographer You Want to Be!

    • Professional photographer, Corey Hilz will offer tips and techniques to help you become the photographer you want to be! This three-part series includes: tips on using key camera functions to capture the best image, composition and lighting, and instruction in Photoshop elements. Registration required.
